The Committee on South Asian Women Bulletin

A Digital Collection

The COSAW Bulletin was the publication of the Committee on South Asian Women, a network of South Asian women and allies dedicated to feminist inquiry and activism. Funded primarily through subscriptions and supported in part by the Women’s Studies Program at Texas A&M University, the Bulletin featured original essays, reviews, interviews, and creative writing that documented and analyzed the struggles and achievements of women in South Asia—including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka—as well as the experiences and concerns of first- and second-generation South Asian immigrants in North America and beyond. To foster dialogue and solidarity, the Bulletin was distributed free of charge to women’s organizations in South Asia and other regions through an exchange program.

Mapping the Early Modern World

The Woellhof Collection at Cushing Memorial Library

Mapping the Early Modern World showcases a selection of rare fifteenth- and sixteenth-century maps from the Woellhof Collection at Cushing Memorial Library & Archives. Established in 2019 through the foundational gift of Ron and Jane Woellhof, the collection includes more than 500 maps, atlases, and charts that document a transformative period in the history of geography and print culture. Centered on richly detailed city views by leading early modern cartographers, the collection captures a moment when European understandings of the world were rapidly expanding. These works reveal how cities were represented as centers of commerce, power, faith, and identity, while also reflecting the evolving political boundaries and geographic knowledge of their time. Many maps are preserved in multiple editions and states, allowing scholars to trace changes in artistic technique, cartographic precision, and imperial ambition across decades. This digital exhibit presents a curated group of these rare and fragile materials, selected by George Carhart and Ron Woellhof. Through high-resolution digital imaging and enhanced descriptive metadata, the project broadens access for research, teaching, and public engagement. It also connects the Woellhof Collection with related cartographic holdings at Cushing, creating a unified platform for exploring the history of cartography as both a scientific discipline and a cultural art form.
